Chemical Engineering Education 4.0: The Best Practices

 

Background: This workshop is specially design for chemical engineering teachers who want to implement an effective 21st Century learning environment using various simple but effective techniques in a systematic and scholarly approach to engage and support students in learning and developing critical skills. Several best practices have been successfully implemented in chemical engineering classes especially in process control will be shown and discussed. Based on practical and easy to understand educational philosophy, these practices serve as examples that will enable participants to modify and design new learning and teaching activities suited for their own classroom implementations and settings. The knowledge imparted in this workshop is crucial for supporting students in attaining more complex skills, such as life-long learning, collaboration, critical thinking and problem solving, that are crucial for survival in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution.

 

Learning Outcomes: By the end of this workshop, participant will be able to:

  • Explain the needs to shift to student-centred learning (SCL) methods in chemical engineering classrooms
  • Explain techniques for engaging chemical engineering learners that can be used in classrooms
  • Modify and design new learning and teaching activities suited for their own chemical engineering classroom implementations and settings

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd. Kamaruddin Abd. Hamid, an experienced and practised 21st century chemical engineering education for more than 15 years, received his Bachelor, Masters and Doctoral degrees in chemical engineering, from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Technical University of Denmark (DTU), respectively. He received several teaching awards including UTM Teaching Excellence Award (Engineering) 2017, UTM New Academia Learning Innovation (NALI) 2017 Award and Gold Medal, Malaysia’s Education Minister Special Award: Curriculum Design and Innovative Delivery 2018 (AKRI 2018).
