Abstract

This report presents the findings of a research project which examined the attitude of Form Four students toward learning Mathematics. The research was quantitative which involved a total of 141 students from a secondary school in Kuching. The students had to complete one set of questionnaire which consisted of 30 items using the Likert scale. The data was analysed using SPSS version 15.0. Descriptive statistics was used to describe the profile of the samples. In answering the first and second research questions, descriptive statistics such as frequency count and mean were used to describe the learners' performance and attitude. The T-test was carried out to determine whether there was any significant difference in performance and attitude towards learning Mathematics by age, gender and class. In answering the third and fourth research questions, Chi-square test was performed to determine any significant relationship between students' demographic variables with their performance and students' demographic variables with their attitude towards Mathematics. In answering the fifth research question, correlation analysis was performed to determine any significant relationship between students' performance and their attitude towards learning Mathematics. The strength of the relationship between the two variables was determined by using the Pearson's Index. The students' attitude was analysed through three different aspects. Pearson correlation Analysis of the relationship between students' performance and their attitude towards Mathematics showed that students with good performance in Mathematics have a positive attitude towards learning Mathematics.
