Abstract

The objective of this study is to find out the common teaching techniques and approaches the teachers use in teaching literature component in English. The study also seeks the rationale behind the use of these techniques and approaches. This study has been carried out on the English teachers in four selected rural secondary schools in Kuching Division. Questionnaire and open-ended questions are used to collect data from the samples in this study. The samples are the English teachers who are involved in teaching the literature component in English. The findings from this study, through the questionnaire and open-ended questions, reveals that there are common techniques and approaches that the teachers use in their literature lesson. These are questioning techniques, the use of teaching aids, classroom activities, class discussion, the use of teaching materials, the use of instructions and the reinforcements. The study also found out that there are many reasons why these teachers use these common techniques and approaches.
