Abstract

The objective ofthis study is to identify the effects of inflation on the household's expenditure at RPR Batu Kawa, Kuching, Sarawak. This study will explore specificaHy how inflation will affect the changes in the expenditure of the residents of different demographic characteristic in RPR Batu Kawa. Ninety five respondents have been selected by using the quota sampling method to be interviewed with structured interview schedule. Data that has been collected were analyzed using the Statiscal Packages for Social Sciences 15.0 for Windows (SPSS). From the result of analysis, it was found that different demographic characteristics among residents in RPR Batu Kawa had influenced their expenditure patterns. However, the result of the analysis showed that residents in RPR Batu Kawa had increased significantly their expenditure on food and transportation after inflation for every type of demographic characteristics. It was suggested to government that a healthy economic environment should be created to protect the lowerincome earners from the negative effects of inflation such as through establishment of minimum wage rules.
