Abstract
This study aims to identify the factors that affecting career development among teachers in secondary schools. The study was conducted in SMK Kota Samarahan and SMK Sungai Tapang. Quantitative method was used and four Likert-scale questionnaires were distributed to the respondents. The respondents used in this study are 100 people. This study was conducted to detennine the relationship between selected factors which consists of demographic characteristics, family influence, advancement opportunities, supervisor support, and recognition and teachers' perceptions towards their career development. Demographic characteristics of the respondents which included gender, age, marital status and level of education are reviewed to determine its' significant difference and respondents' perceptions towards career development by using Independent Samples T -test and One-way ANOVA. In addition, the relationship between these factors and the perceptions of teachers towards their career development were tested by using Pearson Correlation Coefficient. The results found that all the factors studied showed that there was significant relationship between family influence, advancement opportunities, supervisor support, and recognition and respondents' perceptions towards career development. Based on these findings, several recommendations were presented to the school, teachers and future researchers. The school should continue to monitor progress or teachers' performance, and provide opportunities for promotion and recognition to teachers in schools so that teachers can enhance their knowledge and performance in school continuously. The teachers also suggested participate in activities organized by the school or the Education Department in order to enhance their level of recognition and advancement opportunities in schools. Future researchers are also encouraged to involve more factors, respondents and focus on broader subjects to obtain more accurate information.
