Abstract

In response to the implementation of using English to replace Bahasa Melayu as the medium of instruction for science and mathematics in school throughout Malaysia, a stud y was conducted to look into learners ' views and difficulties they faced in the learning of mathematics in English. A total of two hundred Form Four students fro m three secondary schools in Bau participated in the study. Instrument in the fornl of questionnaire and semi-structured interviews used to collect data from the respondents. The Endings show that majority of the respondents hold a positive view towards the use of English as the medium of instruction to learn Mathematics. The most significant difficulties the learners faced are regarding weak language proficiency that led to their inability to understand mathematical terms, concepts, instructions, questions and the language use in Maths textbooks.
