Abstract
How far an individual can effectively cope with occupational stress is depending on his/her ability to choose the proper coping strategies. The relationship between coping strategies and occupational stress was investigated in a sample (N=40) of staff at Maktab Perguruan Tun Abdul Razak (MPTAR). The relationships were identified by using items adapted from Personal Resources Questionnaire in Occupational Stress Inventory-Revised (Samuel, 1998) and Job Stress Survey, JSS (Spielberger & Vagg, 1999). Pearson correlation was used to identify the relationships between coping strategies and occupational stress. Result of this study indicated that social support and rational/cognitive coping had a significant relationship with occupational stress. These findings suggest that social support and rational/cognitive coping were effectively reducing individual’s occupational stress. Recreation and self-care have no significant relationship with occupational stress in this study. This suggests employees of MPTAR do not prefer recreation and self-care coping strategies to cope with occupational stress.
