Abstract

There are five species of genus Anisoptera found in Sarawak namely Anisoptera costata Korth., Anisoptera grossivenia Slooten., Anisoptera laevis Ridl., Anisoptera marginata Korth., and Anisoptera reticulata Ashton. This study was conducted to obtain details information on leaf morphology, anatomy and palynology characters of the Anisoptera species particularly in Sarawak region. The leaf characteristic is important for field identification while anatomy and palynology study is important as secondary data for identification. The specimens used in this studied were obtained from Sarawak Forestry Herbarium (SAR). This study includes morphology on leaf, fruit and flower structure, anatomy on stomata, epidermal cell, trichome and pollen structure. The details structure of leaves and pollen anatomy were observed using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) model JSM 6390LA. From observation made, Anisoptera grossivenia possessed distinct characters on the abaxial leaf surface with scurfy texture, has small lepidotes, and yellow-orange in appearance. The anatomy study of the species showed that the stomata were covered by scales and clustered hair trichomes. Four types of trichomes were observed namely the scales, glandular cell, clustered hair and peltate trichomes. Two types of stomata were observed that were the anisocytic and paracytic types. Several shapes of pollen were observed in this study namely oval triangular obtuse convex, oval, irregular and heart shaped. Two types of pollen wall sculptures were observed described as reticulate and scabrate. The morphology, anatomy and palynology studies provide pertinent information for the identification of Anisoptera species. These informations would also be useful for the conservation and other study in the future.
