Abstract

BACKGROUND Disability is part of the human condition. Almost everyone will be temporarily or permanently impaired at some point in life (World Report on Disability 2011). Persons with disabilities are part of society, and are capable of being active and contributing members of society. However, disabled people continue to be disadvantaged by social, physical and economic barriers in society, and their opportunities for personal development and full participation in society is thwarted. Further, disabled persons’ intrinsic human rights have not been fully met, neither has disability rights been a topic of research interest. Disability studies as an interdisciplinary field of study applies social, cultural, political, and philosophical perspectives to the study of disability in society. Viewing disability as a social construct and people with disabilities as a minority group, disability studies reaffirms disability rights, and privileges the experiences of people with disabilities through research, education and policy development. Policy and practice related to disability are about transforming systems and environment so that they are inclusive of every person. The aim of this conference is to provide a forum for people from diverse backgrounds and different abilities to share experience, practice and research on promoting a rights-based perspective of disability.
