Abstract
This work was initiated to investigate the scenario of the energy usage for the office buildings in Kuching, Sarawak. According to Sarawak Electricity Supply Corporation (SESCO) annual statistics report 2001; commercial buildings are well known as the second largest consumer of energy. The survey was on the energy consumption of Kuching office buildings, which involves two high-rise office buildings namely Menara Pelita and Bangunan Sultan Iskandar. The objectives of this project are to identify the usage and the breakdown of energy. Then, from the results, the indexes gained were compared with the indexes targeted by Malaysian Department of Energy - around 135 kWh/m2/year. The results were analyzed from the bill provided with respect to the facade design, age of the buildings, number of occupants, temperature settings and number of office equipments such as computers, fax machines, photocopy machines etc. The energy conservation opportunities were later identified from the literature survey and the results obtained. The energy efficiency is very important for us as it contributes to the cleaner environment, preserve the natural resources for the generation of electricity, and cost savings
