Abstract

Literature is one of the major subjects in the English as Second Language (ESL) and Teaching English as Second Language (TESL) programmes offered in University Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). In the literature courses, students are exposed to literary texts drawn from short stories, poetry, novel and plays in English. Some students consider literature as difficult and challenging because the literary texts are often rich in multiple levels of meaning and demand the students to be actively involved with the text in order to form hypothesis and drawing inferences and make interpretation of the meaning. One of the techniques used in literature classes in by grouping students into small groups. However, not all students can cope with group activity in class and this can be due to a variety of reasons. This study aims to investigate the ESL and TESL students' perception of group activities in literature classes in UNIMAS. This is a survey research because the data gathered from all ESL and TESL students in UNIMAS using questionnaire to obtain their perception and the reasons of their perceptions. Besides, this study also explored the advantages and disadvantages of group wok activities in literature classes. The result suggests that the majority of the students were positive toward their perception of group wok activities in literature classes. The results also showed that the respondents state slightly more advantages than disadvantages. This indicated that although the students enjoy and find that group work activities important, they acknowledge that there are advantages and disadvantages.
