Abstract
The SMS-Based Vending System intends to replace the coin insertion mechanism in vending machine with the Short Message Services (SMS) to bring the vending business steps into cashless world. The price of the product will be deducted from customer's phone credit. This system consists of two Nokia 3310 cellular phones, an AT89C52 microcontroller and a Visual Basic program. F-BUS protocols are used to control the phone to send, receive and delete SMS. Microcontroller is configured to operate in asynchronous serial interrupt mode to receive data from cellular phone. The MSComm component of Visual Basic is used to handle the serial data transfer between the cellular phone and computer. The signal level conversion is essential because the phone, computer and microcontroller are operated in different signal levels. The F-BUS standard of the phone can be converted to RS232 standard of the computer via FLA-5 adapter and the RS232 standard can be converted to TTL standard of the microcontroller via MAX232 chip.
