Abstract
This research involves a content ana1ysis on the English programmes on CATS EM in order to analyze the social roles of a private radio station. Specifically, this study examines the radio as an entertainer, informer and educator. A total of35 hours of the English programmes were recorded onto audio cassettes sparing one week. The process of data collection was carried out by transcripting all the recorded programmes into script before coding them in the coding form. Data collected were ana1ysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 10.0. Findings reveal that entertainment and information elements have dominated the content of English programmes. However, the educational elements were of lower priority compared to the entertainment and information elements.
