Abstract

Bako National Park is located at the Muara Tebas Peninsula, about 30km north of Kuching city south west Sarawak. Bako National Park was gazetted in 1957 and it is the oldest national park in Sarawak. It covers about 27 sq. km with seven prominent types of forests. One of the main attractions of Bako National Park is the proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus) also known as "Orang Belanda" in Malay. The total population of proboscis monkey is 235+ 9.1 individuals estimated, while, the density of the proboscis monkey at this park is 0.857 individuals per hectare. This research used the line/belt transects method: where each proboscis monkey sighted along the trail was counted. The total belt transect area of the forest types included in the trail was also estimated. Standard error for the total population of proboscis monkey was also estimated. The population of this primate is believed to be decreasing probably due to food availability and intra-specific association. Differences in field methods applied by previous researches may also led for variation of total number for estimating the population for this primate.
