Abstract

The aim of this study was to identify whether the plants in the Bau Mining District area were contaminated with heavy metals due the mineralization present there. This study determined the types of heavy metals 111 the selected flora and their concentrations. The sampling locations were at Bidi, Tai Ton, Jambusan and Pejiru situated in the Bau Mining District area. The elements studied were manganese (Mn), copper (ell), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (CO), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn). The findings of this study showed that most of the plant samples were free from toxicity of heavy metals with the exception to pucuk manis in Bidi in which the Zinc concentration was at a toxic level for plants. From the view point of the Food Act (198]), however, the concentrations of Cd at all the sampling locations except Jambusan were found to be above the permissible level The zinc concentration in pucuk manis at all the sampling locations were also found to be above the permissible amount.
