Abstract
This study aimed at finding out whether English for Social Purposes (ESP) 1 learners in UNIMAS experienced language anxiety in their English language classroom, the type of language anxiety, the level of the learners anxiety and whether there are differences in terms of level and types of anxiety between genders. The respondents of this research were 61 Universiti Malaysia Sarawak students who are undergoing English for Social Purposes 1 course. For the purpose of this study, two instruments were used for data collection. The first was a self�rated questionnaire adopted form the Foreign Classroom Language Anxiety Scale (FCLAS) by Horwitz, Horwitz & Cope (1986), administered to 61 ESP 1 students and the other was the interview sessions with 20 of the respondents who were selected randomly. Percentage and frequency count was used in analyzing the data. The overall findings illustrated that the ESP 1 students do experience anxiety in the language classroom. The results demonstrated students endure a rather high level of anxiety in the English language classroom with majority of them are prone to experience "communicative apprehension". The findings also reveal that anxiety differs between genders with the female respondents exhibiting a higher level of anxiety in the English language classroom compared to the male respondents
