Abstract

The plantation industry plays a critical role in supporting livelihoods and maintaining environmental balance. However, the challenges of monoculture farming, environmental degradation, and socioeconomic instability demand innovative approaches for sustainable development. This presentation, titled "A Sustainable Approach for Diversifying Livelihood and Environment in Plantation Industry", highlights the findings from a survey on Integrated Weed Management Programs at Oil Palm Plantations. The survey aimed to identify effective weed management strategies that not only reduce chemical dependency but also promote biodiversity, improve soil health, and enhance the overall sustainability of plantation ecosystems. The study emphasizes the need for integrated approaches that combine cultural, mechanical, biological, and chemical weed control methods, ensuring minimal environmental impact while supporting long-term productivity. Additionally, this approach contributes to diversified income sources for plantation workers, reducing economic vulnerability and supporting community resilience. The findings of this survey provide valuable insights for plantation managers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders seeking to balance economic growth with environmental sustainability.
