Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate Preparatory English 1 (PBI 0011) undergraduates' attitudes towards learning English in the tertiary setting. The sample of the study involved 159 UNIMAS undergraduates from all eight different groups who were taking the course when this study was done. The respondents were 47 male and 112 female undergraduates. The instrument used for the data collection was questionnaire. The data from the questionnaire was analyzed using frequency count to obtain information based on the research questions. The findings revealed that the PBI 0011 undergraduates possessed positive attitudes towards learning English. These were demonstrated by their positive attitudes towards the English speakers and the English language itself. The findings also revealed that the respondents also held positive attitudes towards the learning of English language, and the English course. However, their attitudes towards the English instructor were not very positive. Though the findings of their attitudes towards their English instructor were not very positive, this does not prove that they have negative attitudes towards their instructor. This suggests that they might have different learning styles in learning the language where they prefer to learn English on their own.
