Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find out practices used and possible difficulties encountered by Fonn 4 secondary English teachers in teaching poetry. The focused samples are teachers who are teaching literature component- the poems. Most of the respondents interviewed have been teaching for more than five years, unfortunately, they have insufficient experiences in poetry teaching due to many factors. Thus, by discovering appropriate practices and techniques, teachers capable to run poetry lessons smoothly and overcome the difficulties or problems in poetry teaching. The instrument used for this study was interview. A series of questions consisted of 14 items were designed for data collection from 20 randomly chosen English teachers from 5 randomly chosen schools around Kuching. Data collected were analyzed and discussed descriptively. The findings of the study showed that all the teachers employed variations of techniques in poetry teaching. Explanation was identified as the most effective technique used by the teachers in teaching poetry. Study done showed that students understood the poem better when teachers explained the meaning or message conveyed in the poems. They also faced various kinds of difficulties such as understanding the literary terms and words used in the poems, which restricted the success of the lesson and their interests in poetry. As a conclusion, teachers need to build their own interests in poetry and should be highly motivated in order to create students' interests in the subject. Apart from that, teachers should be creative and selective in choosing the appropriate techniques used in poetry teaching because the chosen techniques determine the successful of the lessons.
