Abstract

This study aims to find out teachers' perception of the Buddy Support System in Secondary school. The objectives are namely to find out the Buddies'(Mathematics and Science teachers) perception of the roles of the Critical friends (English Language teachers), effect of the Buddy Support System on the Buddies' English Language proficiencies, the benefits of the Buddy Support System and problems encountered by the Buddies and Critical friends in the Buddy Support System. The respondents were 70 Mathematics and Science teachers from 3 secondary school in Bau District. The data for the study was obtained through 2 instruments - questionnaire and interview. The findings revealed that majority of the respondents have positive attitudes toward the Buddy Support System as a support system to help them to improve their English Language proficiency. The most significant problems faced by the Buddies and the Critical friends are constraints such as heavy workload, conducting extra lesson for exam classes, not having the Buddy Support System committee in the school and the Critical friends need to be well-trained to conduct the Buddy Support System in school. Findings from the interview also show similarity to the finding from the questionnaire that the Buddies really need assistance from their Critical friends to improve their English Language proficiency and instructional language.
