Abstract

This project sought to investigate the use of newspapers in English As a Second Language Classrooms in secondary schools in Sarawak. The project aims to find out how teachers carry out Newspapers In Education during the English lessons. One hundred and twenty seven secondary English language teachers were involved in this project. The instrument used for data collection was questionnaire. The data was recorded, calculated and analyzed descriptively. The findings of this project revealed that there were reasons for using and not using newspapers in the English As a Second Language classrooms. The reasons for using Newspapers In Education (NIE) were: using NIE to teach improved students' in the mastery of English language, exposed students to newspapers, enriched students' vocabulary, provided students with current issues, enhanced students' creativity in learning English, provided students with text models, enriched students with the general knowledge, enabled students to use grammar correctly and motivated students to learn. The reasons for not using Newspapers In Education were: teachers preferred to use textbooks and workbooks rather than NIE, using NIE was wasting time, the materials from NIE were always not related or too difficult for the lessons and did not suit the English language learning skills and learning objectives. Not only that, teachers were not exposed to NIE activities in conducting English language lessons, teachers had to prepare lessons to teach Literature Component, teachers had to adapt materials in order to teach and they did not have enough time to conduct NIE. The findings further revealed the practices of teachers for NIE as there were language skills related to NIE in the classrooms. The findings suggest that more seminars and workshops should be held to expose teachers to NIE because it benefits both teachers and students
