Abstract

This study aims to examine the perspective of female readers towards the portrayal of female protagonist in literary texts. Using questionnaire as an instrument, the researcher investigated the perspective of TESL female students in University Malaysia Sarawak by means of their responses to five short stories used in this study. The five short stories selected are the text that the respondents have learned throughout their literature courses in UNIMAS and all of the text feature female as the protagonist. This study also examined gender stereotypes that often emerged underneath the representation of female portrayals in literature through the perspective of the respondents. The study indicates that female readers are aware of the stereotypes in female protagonist in literary texts and it is in some way affected the interest in reading the texts. The study also revealed that most female students prefer strong portrayal of female protagonist. The study has implications for teaching and learning of literature in the language classroom particularly for female students.
