Abstract

Adsorption of crystal violet is an alternative technology to remove dyes from wastewater. AC has been used to remove crystal violet from aqueous solution efficiently. However, the use of activated carbon is limited due to its high cost. Hence, in this study, a low-cost adsorbent was prepared from coconut husk and was utilized as the adsorbent for the removal of crystal violet from aqueous solution. Sulfuric acid treatment was used to prepared the adsorbent. The effects different initial concentration of crystal violet, dosage of adsorbent and contact time on the adsorption process were studied. The adsorption equilibrium parameters were analysed using both the Freundlich and Langmuir models. The data were better fitted by the Freundlich isotherm as compared to Langnnuir model, and the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent for crystal violet was 13.31 mg/g. The kinetic parameters of pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models were determined and the correlation coefficients were calculated. The results showed that the pseudo firstorder equation provided the better correlation at lower initial concentration and adsorbent dosage. However, at higher initial concentration and adsorbent dosage, pseudo-second-order equation gave better correlation. This study revealed that activated carbon from waste coconut husk is an effective low-cost adsorbent for the removal of dyes in aqueous solution
