Abstract

The inclusion of new technologies and social networks in education is inevitably increasing its importance. The use of virtual chat group is found to be convenient and common for educators to assist the students after formal school time. Virtual chat group also one of popular way to assist students in project-based learning (PoBL). This research is designed to investigate the content and types of interactions of students and teacher in the post-class group in PoBL by categorical encoding conversation analysis. Next, find out the usefulness of the post-class interactions in assisting them to complete their projects through interviewing 19 participants. The findings indicate that conversations in post-class group are majority task-focused discussion and extended discussion, which also contribute to the subject-related conversations. Besides, the interview results showed positive opinions as the virtual chat group did assist them to complete their projects. The researcher also found the quality of the students’ project work had improved as compared to previous cohorts. Recommendations for improvement of virtual chat group used and other suggestions of apps also included in this research.
