Abstract
Introduced aquatic species are defined as a plant or animal moved from one place to another by humans. Helostoma temminckii (C.&V.) was introduced into Sarawak in 1956 has invaded fivers and lakes of the lower Baram. To study the genetic variation of the fish, samples were collected from four sites along the Bakong River. Cytochrome oxidase I (COl) mtDNA gene was amplified by PCR and screened for genetic variation using two molecular methods. DNA sequencing and RFLP. Phylogenetic analysis was done using three methods, namely the distance matrix, maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood. The nucleotide divergence between samples varied between 1.0 and 4.0 %. There is an occurrence or gene flow among the populations but the genetic variation within all population is still low. The genetic variation was low in all populations probably because they have only been introduced recently, about 50 years ago.
