Abstract

Rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis) which belongs to family Euphorbiacea contain high percentage of tension wood. An anatomical study was done on tension wood and normal wood of rubber. The objectives of this Study were to differentiate and reveal trend of the tension wood and normal wood according to their height and radial direction. Slide preparation and maceration were done for anatomical measurement. One - way ANOVA and Turkey's test were used to analyze differences anatomica1 properties. The overall anatomical properties of normal wood and tension wood were significantly different. Results showed that fiber length in tension wood was longer than normal wood Fiber diameter and fiber lumen diameter are found to be larger in normal wood. Fiber wall thickness was thicker in tension wood than normal wood because the presence of gelatinous layer (G-Layer). Ray height and its diameter were higher and wider in tension wood. Vesel diameter smaller and more in number in normal wood. Trend with respect to height level in tension wood and normal wood showed that fiber length, fiber diameter, fiber lumen diameter and ray height have similar trend. However anatomical trend in radial direction did not show fixed pattern for both tension and normal wood.
