Abstract

Sago 'hampas' is one of the valuable agro wastes that offers huge opportunities to be explored as a raw material for many bioconversion process. In this work, a solid state fermentation (SSF) for cellulase production by indigenous Aspergillus niger isolate was carried out by employing sago ' hampas' as substrate. The parameters examined include moisture content of sago hampas. concentration of mineral salt solution, pH and time of incubation. In this study, the highest cellulase activity was exhibited when the initial moisture content of 70% (v/w) and 20% (v/w) mineral salt solution concentration were applied. Meanwhile pH5 was identified as the optimum pH for attainment of high cellulase activity while incubation up to 144 hours has led to the maximum production of cellulose. The highest cellulase activity achieved in the study was 0.0702 IU/ml. Considering its wide availability, low cost and promisil1g potentiality. sago hampas may serve as an ideal choice of substrate for production of enzymes such as cellulase.
