Abstract

Content schema is known to play important role in second language reading comprehension. Comprehension is seen as the interaction between top-down processing, from activated schemata and bottom-up processing, from concepts expressed by the text. If readers activate an inappropriate or possess lack of content schema, they may miss meaning of the text. Thus, this study is sought to find out the effect of using content schema in second language reading comprehension among the Form 4 students in the Tarat Secondary School. A portion of 60 respondents out of the entire Form 4 population of the school were involved in this study. A series of test was used as a data gathering instruments which involves all the respondents. The test consists of two passages of different events in which one of them happens in the country whilst another event occurs in other countries. The findings show that content schema indeed helps respondents to comprehend the familiar text better. The text is about the event that happens in the country.
