Abstract

Based on the corpus-based approach, this paper examines the conceptual metaphors of “face” in Chinese, “脸face” and “面face”. The study explored the metaphorical meanings, usage and cultural connotation of the Chinese words “脸face” and “面face”. The corpus is mainly from the Center for Chinese Linguistics (CCL) corpus of Peking University and covers a wide range of text types and fields. The search was conducted using these two keywords, and 50,000 relevant word tokens were obtained. These two words have rich metaphorical meanings in Chinese, involving individual emotions, social status, environment, and problems. Further conceptual metaphor analysis reveals the abstract concepts implied by “脸face” and “面face”, which reflect the unique cultural cognition and value system in Chinese. This study provides important clues for understanding metaphorical meanings in Chinese, and provides reference for cross-cultural communication and understanding.
