Abstract
This study was carried out to determine the suitability of using recycled waste material as an alternative material for unbound road material. Crushed asphalt and concrete samples as recycled material were collected from Batu Kawa Reconstruction Project. These crushed samples were used and tested for Los Angeles Abrasion Test, Aggregate Crushing Value and California Bearing Ratio. The test results were compared with the existing specifications for base and subbase materials of Public Works Department (JKR) of Malaysia. The test results were also compared with secondary data from Central Material Laboratory (CML) for various sources of aggregates in Sarawak where the aggregates are granite, microtonalite, sandstone and limestone. The laboratory test results revealed that for % Loss, crushed concrete was found to meet the specifications of subbase set by JKR. For 40: 60 mixtures, it was found that it meets the specification for both base and subbase also set by JKR. As for aggregates from Sarawak, they also meet the pecification for both base and subbase. For ACV test results, crushed asphalt, 40: 60 mixtures and aggregates from Sarawak were found to meet the specification for both base and subbase set by JKR. Finally, for CBR test results, both crushed concrete and 50: 50 mixtures meet the specification for subbase layer. Structural layer coefficient for subbase layer are determined since the recycled materials for this study are suitable for subbase layer according to the result from CBR.
