Abstract
This study aims to develop a web site for the academic rules regulation of the bachelor program at University Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). Specifically, this study looks into the importance of content organization in the development of the web site as a major contributor to its effectiveness as a medium for information searching. Four assumptions for content organization were used and tested in the design and development of the web site. The assumptions are (1) usage of suitable language and meanings of words in terms of phrases and grammar will make the content easier to understand, (2) application of the hierarchy model in content organization will make the Content easier to differentiate in terms of categories, (3) application of categorization of content into main topics will make the content accessible to users with different perspectives, and (4) application of questioning techniques will enable users to find information relevant to specific needs. The Waterfall model was used in the development process of the web site. In the testing, a set of questionnaire was used to gather data. A total of 60 respondents consisting of students from the Faculty of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development in UNIMAS were involved in the testing. The collected data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). The results were discussed using descriptive analysis based on frequency (n) and percentage (%). The findings showed that the majority of the respondents accepted all the assumptions. Thus, all the assumptions used in organizing the content of the web site proved to be crucial in developing a web site that is effective as a medium for information searching.
