Abstract

From the time When the popularization of emotional Intelligence (EQ) by Daniel Goleman ill his first successful book simply called Emotional intelligence: What is it and Why it Matters? in 1995 come to the management world, it has attracted many management practitioners to explore the profound knowledge. In reality, we apply emotional intelligence in almost everything that we do. Situation like expressing anger, frustration and making friends are all part and parcel of emotional intelligence. In the workplace, executives and managers would have the upper hand on implementing and using emotional intelligence. Traces of emotional intelligence can be seen in the way they give orders, how they approach employees or in how they deal with internal or external problems. Nonetheless, managers and executives are in no position to know whether their application of emotional intelligence is of good use or not unless there is feedback from their subordinates. Thus, this study focuses on the employees' viewpoint in regard to the application of emotional intelligence among managers and executives. This research studies the differences between perception of subordinates towards the application of emotional intelligence in accordance to their gender, age and highest educational level. 54 respondents from the group of 89 subordinates in Harwood Timber Sdn Bhd (Kuching Head Office) has kindly gave their cooperation and has been conveniently chosen for the purpose of this study. The hypotheses was tested using three major test; Independent Samples T-Test, ANOVA and Linear Regression. The result of the study shows that there is no significant difference (p = 0.71) between the perception of gender in the application of emotional intelligence among managers and executives. However there is a differences in perception between group of age of subordinates (p= 0.45). Older subordinates (36-41 years) tend to view the application of emotional intelligence exists among managers and executives, especially in terms of motivation and empathy skills. In addition, there is also a difference in perception among subordinates towards Ihe application of emotional intelligence, (p=O.007) where higher educated subordinates (diploma holders) perceives managers and executives to practice more of their motivation, empathy and social skills in the workplace.
