Abstract

Rubberwood (Hevea brasiliensis) tree at three axial (1.0, 5.0 and 7.5 m high) and three radial (7.6, 11.6 and 15.6 cm from pith) positions were subjected to attack by soft rot (Chaetomium globosum) and white rot (Schizophyllum commune) to study their decay ability. The parameter used to determine the extractives content in rubberwood were cold and hot water extractives Contents. Percentage basic density loss, percentage mass loss, and final moisture content were used as a parameter for decay test after 2 months period in modified decay chamber and incubator (28°-2C). Outer part of 7.5 m height was the most durable (with lowest mean in basic density loss) after attacked by both fungi [Chaetomium globosum (0.5%) and Schizophyllum commune (1O.9%)] compared to the other radial positions. The mean value of basic density loss caused by Chaetomium globosum was highest at inner wood (10.9%) of 10.m height and at the same radial position (28.2%) of 5.0 m height. However. Ihe inner part of 1.0 m height hall the highest mean mass loss caused by Chaetomium globosum (12.1%) and for Schizophyllum commune (29.4%) was recorded at inner part of 5.0 m height. The highest mean final moisture content was at the inner part (92.1%) of 5.0 m height by Chaetomium globosum and inner part (55.1%) of 1.0 m height by Schizophyllum commune. The overall mean basic density for rubberwood was highest at inner part (0.672 g/cm3) of 5.0 m height. Mean value of extractives content was highest in the inner pan of 1.0 m height for cold water extractives content (11.0%) and hot water extractives content (22.9%). There was a correlation between basic density loss and mass loss for Schizophyllum commune. There were correlation between decay susceptibility (percentage mass loss and percentage density loss) and radial position of rubberwood (P< 0.05).
