Abstract

This study is aimed at determining the types of English Language home literacy activities engaged in by the Bidayuh students and parents of high and low achievers of the PMR English Language paper and for this study, the high achievers are those students who scored Grade A and the low achievers are those students who scored Grade E in their Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) English Language paper for the year 2003. It also aimed at finding out the influence of the English Language home literacy activities on students' ESL performance in PMR examination, and their parents aspirations towards their children in learning the English Language. A semi-structured interview were administered to a group of 20 students who obtained Grade A for their PMR English Language paper (2003) together with their parents and 20 students who obtained Grade E for their English Language paper (2003) together with their parents, who made up the samples of the study. The results showed that there were a wider variety of English Language home literacy activities that took place in the home of the high achievers group compared to those from the low achievers group. It also showed that the English Language home literacy activities that the students were engaged in do influence the students' ESL performance in PMR examination. However, all the parents from both the high and low achievers group have high aspirations towards their children' learning of the English Language. Based on the findings, suggestions and recommendations for further studies were also discussed.
