Abstract

This study is aimed to find out how the English Language teachers use the KBSM English Language Syllabus in planning and preparing for their lesson plans and use it to conduct their lessons in the classroom. In addition, the study also aims to find out how the language teachers teach grammar in the KBSM Syllabus. The participants of this research are English Language teachers in secondary schools in Kuching. The instrument for data collection is through questionnaire and interview. The finding shows that most of the English Language teachers do read the syllabus before and when planning for their lesson plans. Another finding shows that the teachers teach topics and themes together with the language skills. The finding also disclosed that some of the teachers do use the textbook while the rest use other resources such as the newspapers and other reference books which topics and themes are stipulated in the curriculum specification. As for grammar, most of the teachers reveal that they do teach grammar but not in isolation. They integrate the grammar lessons with other skills. This shows that the language teachers are more aware of the goals, objectives and the learning outcomes ofthe KBSM Syllabus.
