Abstract
Biodiversity is recognized as an important indicator of the health of urban forest. It is recommends that in urban forestry there must no more than 10% of the trees be from any one species. A broader diversity of trees is needed in urban forest to guard against large scale of devastation by insects and diseases pest. A survey was carried out to assess the diversity of urban trees planted in Taman Budaya Kuching. Species diversity index (SDI) of urban trees in Taman Budaya is 22.11 and is considered relatively high. There were 172 tree enumerated in 20 plots of 30m x 30m of the study area including 33 species from 16 botanical families. The most abundant species was Alstonia augusti%lia followed by Lagerstroemia flosregina and Pterocarpus indicus while the most dominant family was Leguminose. The tree diameter, tree canopy shape, tree condition and soil condition also being assessed. The highest diameter distribution was tree with 26cm to 40cm diameter. Irregular spreading was the highest tree canopy distribution. The recommended species and the tree management were discussed.
