Abstract
The construction industry is an important part of the country’s economy. Construction is one of the important industries that contributes greatly to the economic growth of a nation. However, despite being one of the main economic industries in Malaysia, the construction industry has one of the highest rates of occupational injuries and fatalities due to the industry's complexity and the hazards involved during construction work. Therefore, the aim of this study is to identify preventive measures to reduce the rate of construction injuries and fatalities in Sarawak construction projects. The specific objectives of this research are to determine the level of awareness among Sarawak’s construction players about the impact of construction injuries and fatalities on construction projects, identify the contributing factors to construction injuries and fatalities, and identify prevention measures. This research applies a quantitative approach, with data collected by questionnaire distribution among Sarawak's construction players indicating that their company registered in CIDB grades 5, 6, and 7. The data is analysed using SPSS software, which uses descriptive statistics. The main conclusion of this study is that respondents are generally aware that construction injuries and fatalities will delay the completion of projects and that the most significant contributing cause to these accidents is management, which includes a lack of supervision. The most frequent preventive approach is to ensure that construction workers wear personal protective equipment while working. As a result, the conclusion of this study is that it is an effective way to identify the contributing factors first in order to develop preventive measures, which will result in reducing the negative impact of the construction project as well as decreasing the rate of construction injuries and fatalities in construction projects.
