Abstract

Rainwater harvesting system (RWH) is a method of collecting and storing rainwater, particularly relevant in water-scarce regions like Malaysia. Despite abundant rainfall, a significant portion of rainwater goes to waste. The global issue of water scarcity arises from a mismatch between freshwater demand and supply, exacerbated by population growth and development. In order to mitigate these issues, this research aim to determine water demand and supply in Tatau, Sarawak, focusing on a longhouse community which Rumah Junus Anak Lau. The objectives includes to identify water supply system installation challenges, explore improvements for optimizing RWH, and devise strategies for providing consistent and treated water supply to rural areas. Employing both quantitative and qualitative methods, including surveys and interviews with local communities and government agencies, this research found that community’s health is the main challenges for water supply installation. In addition, the storagesystem is the main improvement needed for RWH design meanwhile proper storage is the most effective strategy to provide consistent water supply.
