Abstract
Green residential building (GRB) has been widely introduced as one of the most effective methods to cope with the issue of global warming. However, the development of GRBs in Malaysia is in an imbalance state whereby none of it has been developed in Sarawak. This might be due to the low awareness level and many homebuyers are reluctant to pay the higher cost for GRBs. Moreover, there is no specific model of GRBs can be referred in Sarawak. Thus, this research aimed to establish a model of GRBs among the homebuyers in Sarawak. The methodologies for this research were questionnaire survey for collecting data from 200 homebuyers, Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) for data analysis and inferential analysis for the establishment of model. The objectives of this research were to examine the level of awareness of Sarawak homebuyers towards the benefits of GRBs, to identify the key factors influencing the purchase intention and to establish a GRBs model. Majority of the respondents were highly aware of the environmental benefits rather than the socioeconomic benefits of GRBs. Majority of them perceived that the environmental attitude, and value perception and trustworthiness were the most important key factors compared to the perceived financial risk. For the hypothesis testing, the socioeconomic benefits awareness, value perception and trustworthiness and perceived financial risk were significantly impact the GRBs purchase intention, and this did not include the environmental benefits awareness and environmental attitude. The model can assist the related authorities on the readiness of the Sarawak homebuyers in accepting the green home concept. It is suggested to expand the sampling size, explore the relationships between the underlying items and the higher-level constructs, look into the mediator role of GRBs purchase intention and investigate other determinants which might affect GRBs purchase intention.
