Abstract
Why do I need to care about sustainability issues? This is a question that I often hear when the topic arises. There is nothing I can do because I am not an expert, say some people. Is sustainability something new? While the term "sustainability" is a relatively new concept, the principles and practices that underpin it are not. Throughout human history, people have lived in harmony with nature, using resources in a way that allowed them to meet their needs without compromising the ability of future generations to do the same. Indigenous communities around the world have practised sustainable living for centuries, recognising the interconnectedness of all living things and the need to protect the environment for future generations.
