Abstract

Inquisitive semantics is a research framework used in the field of linguistics to analyse meaning in depth based on empirical data, theoretical framework and reasoning. This study was conducted to systematically analyse and synthesise the inquisitive semantic approach as a method of learning proverbs based on inquiry at the secondary school level. In the Form 4 and Form 5 Malay Language Secondary School Standard Curriculum documents, teachers’ teaching and learning need to emphasise elements of higher order thinking skills such as Inquiry-Based Learning in order to help students master skills in 21st century learning. Two databases, namely Scopus and Google Scholar were used to obtain related articles that focused on publications from 2019 to 2023. This study applied the PRISMA Model as a research procedure. A total of 471 articles were collected but only 20 articles were identified that met the scope of this study. The findings show that the inquisitive semantic study framework successfully unearths the true meaning of proverbs down to the root using the inquiry method in addition to being able to highlight high thinking skills and also the diversity of disciplines. However, the number of studies that use inquisitive semantics as a method of learning aspects of language arts at the secondary school level is still very few. Thus, studies that utilise inquisitive semantics in the context of education can be increased and diversified in the future.
