Abstract

The study of Malay vernacular architecture has been primarily conducted in Peninsular Malaysia, with Sabah and Sarawak receiving less attention. Past research in these regions has focused more on sociology and anthropology rather than architecture. This paper aims to identify the primary typology of vernacular Malay homes in the northern, central, and some southern parts of Sarawak, covering districts such as Miri, Bintulu, Sibu, Kanowit, Bintangor, Sarikei, Saratok, Kabong, Betong, Simanggang, Sebuyau, and Kuching. The need to document the typology of Malay vernacular homes in these areas is urgent due to the rapid urbanization and physical development, which leads to resettlement and changes in traditional dwelling styles, resulting in the loss of original vernacular architecture. The research methodology employs a qualitative approach, involving the observation and documentation of 1,889 houses using a building survey checklist. Selected houses were measured, and their occupants were interviewed. The findings reveal six main vernacular styles: the Sambas style, Verandah Integration style, Open Gable style, and Extended Living Room Style. The variations in these styles are influenced by the owner’s origin, social status, and changes in technology and demography. The paper also discusses the dwellings in terms of building orientation, materials, and unique ornamental and structural elements. This study contributes to the literature on Malay typology and vernacular architecture and serves as a reference for policymakers in preserving traditional Malay homes in Sarawak.
