Abstract

A preliminary study on the fish diet and gut content analysis was conducted at three rivers which includes Sungai Belat, Sungai Tuang and Sungai Sabang in Samarahan, Sarawak. A total on fishes caught of 71 individuals were caught with Ariidae as the dominant family (73.20 %), followed by Gobiidae (5.60 %). The dominant species are Arius caelatus (N=35), followed by Arius sagor (N=13) and Arius argyropleuron (N=3). Mass method and frequency of occurrence method were used to examine the stomach contents. Six types of food category were identified namely digested matter, crustaceans, oligochaetes, algae, fishes and sand/mud were found as for gut content studies for the fishes. Feeding behaviour of all the species captured were identified based of herbivorous, carnivorous and omnivorous. 62.5% of the species were classified as carnivorous fish, 37.5% of the species were classified as omnivorous fish. Findings in this study serve as baseline data for future studies on feeding behaviour of freshwater fish in Sarawak.
