Abstract
Clarias gariepinus, African Catfish have been widely adopted as the most desirable catfish for aquaculture largely due to its high fecundity, growth performance, as well as hardiness to poor water quality. Humans cannot depend on the wildspecies as a food source, hence hormone treatment is used to ensure large-scale catfish fingerling production. Present study used hormone-induced treatment method and natural breeding to compare the effects of Pituitary Gland Hormone (PG) on the reproductive performance of C. gariepinus. A total of 2 mg/kg of PG hormone was injected in each 10 female brooders for first dose and 10 mg/kg was injected again for the second dose. Five mg/kg of PG hormone was injected in each 10 male brooders during the second injection of females. The fish pairs were then captivated in breeding tanks for breeding to take place. Ten pairs of fish injected with distilled water were left to breed. The results showed that all pairs of PG injected fish were successfully spawned, meanwhile, no pair from the control group spawned. The number of eggs produced, fertilized eggs, fish larvae and fish fry were observed and recorded. Current study proved that the injection of PG hormone into African catfish improved the reproductive performances as compared to natural breeding without hormone injection. The methodology also beneficial to the industry due to no male brooder was sacrificed compared to other methodology that killed the male to obtain the milt sac for eggs fertilization. Hence, the methodology benefits particularly the aquaculture industry due to higher seeds production can be achieved in a short-term without sacrificing male brooders.
