Abstract

Rural electrification had been implemented in Sarawak for the 24-hour continuous electrical supply to the rural communities. Sarawak state government had executed several rural electrification plans such as SARES through its implementing company, Sarawak Energy Berhad to achieve full coverage for rural electrification in Sarawak by 2025. SARES project integrates solar photovoltaic (PV) hybrid system and stand-alone solar system to the rural community in Sarawak. The geographical advantages and the availability of the renewable energy sources in Sarawak creates a potential in implementing renewable energy-based power generation for off grid in Sarawak. The implementation of standalone PV system however does not provide continuous generation of electrical power to the rural community due to its intermittency of the solar energy. Solar hybrid system serves as one of the solutions to provide continuous electricity in rural areas as the system does not rely on solar energy alone to provide electricity. In this project, solar PV-Wind hybrid system was proposed to provide continuous electricity to rural areas of Sarawak. Loss of Power Supply Probability (LPSP) will be used to determine the sizing and optimization of the solar PV hybrid system.
