Abstract

The increase of human-macaque conflict in Malaysia, particularly in human settlements, was considerably concerning. Therefore, long-tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis) requires attention from research and management perspectives, particularly M. fascicularis population in Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). Due to the lack of information regarding M. fascicularis population in UNIMAS, hence, this study aimed to investigate population and behavioural ecology of the long-tailed macaque in UNIMAS. A population estimation study was conducted using census walk and behaviour of M. fascicularis was observed using scanning sampling method from February until May 2022. Two groups with a total of 29 individuals were recorded. Present results indicated that long-tailed macaques spent most of their time in moving (31.32%) followed by feeding (22.27%), resting (21.58%), grooming (11.83%), vocalization (8.35%), other activity category (2.78%) and agonistic (1.86%). Findings from this study suggested that availability of food resource highly influences population size and behaviour of macaque. Data from population census and behaviour of the long-tailed macaque can be utilized for further study in order to help prevent potential human-macaque conflicts in UNIMAS.
