Abstract

Common House geckos (Hemidactylus frenatus) are the common reptile that has a close association with human habitat. However, their excrements bring an uncomfortable presence as they may stain their precious belongings. There is a lack of study regarding gastrointestinal parasite infection in house geckos in Sarawak. Most of the studies that are now available on parasites of reptiles have dealt with ecological analyses of hosts and have prioritised conservational concerns over the possibility of zoonotic transmission. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to determine the gastrointestinal parasite in house gecko and to compare the prevalence of infections relative to the host size and gender in an urban area in Kuching, Sarawak. The study area was held at Taman Cahaya, Bandar Baru Samariang, Kuching. A total of 50 samples were collected and examined. A simple floatation method was used to detect the parasite ova in the fecal samples. 96% prevalence of the gastrointestinal parasite was found. The most dominant species was Pharyngodon sp. followed by Ascaris sp., Strongyloides sp., and Raillietiella sp. There is no correlation between size and gender with the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasite infection.
