Abstract

This study is about the effects of yeast extract supplementation on bioethanol fermentation using sago frond sap (SFS) as fermentation media. Method used for this fermentation is batch fermentation by using SFS as fermentation media with 100 mL working volume where one sample is supplemented with yeast extract as nitrogen source and one sample without yeast extract and fermentation is maintained at 30 ℃ . The fermentation was conducted using shaker incubator for 12 hours. Control media sample is made from SFS without yeast extract. Compared to control, SFS has moderate increase in dry cell weight when supplemented with yeast extract. Based on the result from the experiment, it is proven that presence of yeast extract in SFS able to enhance fermentation and produce high yield of ethanol (15.08 g/L) compared to SFS without yeast extract (8.85 g/L). Hence, addition of yeast extract in sago frond sap is crucial in order to achieve high fermentation efficiency.
