Abstract

This study discusses the impacts of forest degradation on the microhabitats that influence the diversity bird species of Stenggang and Sepadah. Both trails, which each is about 1 km long, are located within the Bitonggang Dorod Undan. Eleven point is designated with 100m distance in between for each trail which were used to conduct dawn chorus surveys followed by point count surveys. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Generalized Linear Model (GLM) were used to analyse the four best fit models chosen from all the microhabitat variables that associate to the bird’s communities. Shannon’s Wiener Index and Hutcheson t-test were used to determine which dam’s trails has the most diverse and define whether there is significant difference of bird diversity between both trails. A total 136 individuals from 38 bird species were recorded in Stenggang, while a total 76 individuals of 29 bird species were recorded in Sepadah. As expected, bird diversity in Sepadah trail is significantly different from Stenggang trail. Thus, the hypothesis is rejected which there is significant difference between Stenggang and Sepadah. The diversity in both trails was different because of the greater availability of food in the Stenggang which could attract many common birds such bulbuls, babbler, cuckoo, sunbird, and spiderhunter. Besides, some species such as barbet, babbler and woodpecker species cannot successfully adapt in the disturbance areas in the Sepadah.
