Abstract

Cholera is an acute disease caused by Vibrio cholera serogroup O1 or O139 from contaminated food or water and has become a major public health problem in Malaysia. A cross- sectional study was conducted using an internet questionnaire by utilizing Google Form. The data was analyzed using Microsoft Excel, SPSS software and MedCal Statistical Software. Logistic regressions and Fisher exact tests were applied to the test data. P < 0.05 was used as the statistically significant. The 180 participants included 160 controls and 20 cases gathered from the questionnaire. Logistic regression analysis showed no regular water supply (OR=4.16, CI: 1.16-15.17, p =0.04), and do not practice a good preservation method (OR =5.67, CI: 2.13-15.07, p =0.0008) and do not wash hands before eating (OR =16.71, CI: 4.21-66.32, p =0.0001) are the main risk factors for the outbreak of cholera. Participants show a solid comprehension of cholera. The association between cholera outbreaks and the factors that are related to the outbreak are understood. Not washing hands before eating is a significant independent risk factor for a cholera outbreak. Development of water infrastructure, as well as improvements in hygiene and sanitation conditions, are both essential components in the fight against the endemic.
